When choosing a computer for an office environment, it's important to consider all the options and variables in the users environment. Finding out what the users needs will be today and in the future is key to acquiring a reliable computer system.
Servers, for example need to have fast components such as processors (CPU), hard drives (RAID Array), memory and network interface cards. A server dedicated to sharing files over a network is not usually CPU intensive; however if the server is running remote access or application services, a fast CPU is required. A server contains many more devices with a wide array of storage options vs. it's networked workstation computers. Non-critical components to a server include audio cards, video cards, or monitors. These devices can be downgraded to conserve money and streamline the server environment.
For home users that need access to applications such as Microsoft Office, Internet (Email, Web), purchasing mid to high grade parts should be considered. Having enough storage space for your files, photos, and music is always important. Plan ahead! Often I find that buying a larger hard drive or faster processor will increase the life span of the computer and save you money in upgrades.
Serious gamers or video/graphics editors like myself will find that a high end video card is extremely important in a new computer. High-end video cards today have multi-monitor support and enable the user to run demanding video applications or games in a seemingly alive environment.
